Utah’s “Little Hollywood”
The stunning and rugged red-rock terrain of southern Utah has attracted Western movie film directors to Kanab since the 1920s.
Southern Utah’s Kane County is also known as “Utah’s Little Hollywood.” MGM liked Kanab so much they built a makeshift studio outside of town in the 1940s. More than 100 motion pictures have been filmed here.
In fact, more Westerns were produced here than
anywhere outside of California. John Wayne, Ronald
Reagan, Clint Eastwood, and a host of stars made movies in the area.
The Gunsmoke TV series used the Johnson Canyon Movie Set for over 20 episodes shot between the ‘50s and ‘70s. The now-famous western town is located just east of Kanab. The set is on private property, but can still be viewed from the road or with a tour guide. Sets from Outlaw and other movies can be visited for free at Frontier Movie Town.
The Paria Canyon movie set was used in the Clint Eastwood classic The Outlaw Josey Wales. Lake Powell was the location for Maverick, The Hulk, Broken Arrow, and both versions of Planet of the Apes. The last motion picture to be filmed in the area was Looking Glass in 2017.
