This Hitch, also called a Tugboat Hitch and a ‘No-name Knot’, is particularly
useful when taking a tow as it can be released under even the greatest
tension. To form, take a round turn on the samson post then pass a bight
under the standing part and drop it down over the top of the post. Take
another turn (not a round turn) on the post then again pass a bight under
the standing part and drop it down over the post. This process can be
repeated as often as required to prevent slipping under load.
The photos show the hitch being used to secure a spring to a sheet winch.
