The problem is that some things may be true that are not physical in nature. Science cannot determine
how things came into being because those processes are not observable or repeatable. Science cannot
experiment with the reality of love, or courage, or hatred because those things cannot be touched and
placed in a test tube. Science cannot validate historical events. Science cannot verify or explain
miracles. There are millions of things that may be true that are outside the realm of science.
Scientists often claim that science is fact and everything else is faith. The Bible according to most
scientists is an ancient book of nice sayings but is not necessarily true or factual. How could Jonah live in
the belly of a great fish for three days? How can a body of water be parted and stand up with two
walls? How can a man feed 5,000 people with two fish and five loaves of bread? These things, to some
scientists are fables but not true. We hear that faith and science are at war, and so we need to pick
sides. Today, students entering college are challenged to accept only what can be physically felt, seen,
smelled as the only truth that exists.
A college professor made such claims in a biology class. He said, “If we cannot touch it, taste it, or smell
it, we have no reason to believe it exists!” A student in the class asked him a question. “Professor, have
you ever touched, tasted, or smelled your brain?” The professor replied, “Of course not!” To that, the
student replied, “Well then, it must not exist!”
All truth is God’s truth! In fact, God created both science and faith to work together. Some of the
greatest scientists of all time believed this to be true. Consider some of them:
Francis Bacon – created the scientific method
Robert Boyle – defined elements, compounds, and mixtures. Discovered the first gas law.
Antoine Lavoisier – Founder of modern chemistry
Michael Faraday – Discovered the link between light and magnetism.
James Clerk Maxwell – Light was an electromagnetic wave. Kinetic theory.
Gregor Mendel – Founded science of genetics
Sir Isaac Newton – Law of Universal Gravitation and laws of motion. Invented Calculus. Built first ever
telescope.
John Dalton – discovered Gay-Lussac’s law
Francis Collins – Invented positional cloning.
Blaise Pascal – Probability theory – invented the hydraulic press and mechanical calculator
Lord Kelvin – Codified the first two laws of thermodynamics.
Nicolas Steno – founder of modern geology and stratigraphy
Albrecht von Haller – Father of modern physiology
Charles Babbage – The father of the modern computer.
Ernest Walton – Winner of Nobel Prize in Physics after splitting the atom and proved E = mc2.
Francis Sellers Collins is an American physician-geneticist who discovered the genes associated with a
number of diseases and led the Human Genome Project. He is director of the National
Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, United States.
These men became scientists BECAUSE of their faith! At one time, theology (the study of God) was
called “the queen of all sciences.”
But obviously, not every scientist began their work believing in God. Francis Collins was raised in a home
that didn’t ever talk about faith. When he was older, he became a geneticist—one of the best in the
world—and was made the head of the Human Genome Project to learn more about human beings. He
