Study Section 9: Supernatural Signs
9.1 Connect
Have you ever attended a court session? I have. I was accused of something for which I did not
do. But in the course of law, you have to prove your position. How can you prove your
innocence? You might have several witnesses testify that you did not do it or that you were at
their house when you supposedly did something. You might hold up some solid evidence that
proves you to be true. The court will look at all the evidence you present, and if it is strong
enough to prove your case, you will be found innocent.
When Jesus came to earth, he claimed to be the Messiah. But many people had come in the past, and many
more came after Him that claimed they were Israel’s Messiah. How could people know for sure that Jesus was
really the Messiah. He performed miracles that only the Messiah (God with us) could do. Only God could make
blind people see, or lame people walk, or feed thousands with only two loaves. Only God could speak to the
waves and wind and they would obey Him. Only God could raise a dead person to life again. His miracles were
the strongest evidence He could present of the validity of His message. Let’s see how this works as we move
forward in the book of John.
9.2 Objectives
1. The student should be able to state the witnesses to Jesus Christ’s claim to be the Messiah.
2. The student will be able to explain how Jesus is all sufficient as they understand the feeding of the
5,000.
9.3 The Two Resurrections John 5:25 – 29
Spiritual Resurrection
The Persons
John 5:25 “I assure you: An hour is coming, and is now here, when the will hear the voice of
the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
The Power
John 5:26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted to the Son to have life in Himself.
27 And He has granted Him the right to pass judgment, because He is the Son of Man. Do not be amazed at
28
29
this, because a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come out—those who
have done good things, to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked things, to the resurrection
of judgment. “I can do nothing on My own. I judge only as I hear, and My judgment is righteous, because I
30
do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. “If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not
31
valid. There is Another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony He gives about Me is valid.
32
33 You have sent [messengers] to John, and he has testified to the truth. I don’t receive man’s testimony, but
34
I say these things so that you may be saved. John was a burning and shining lamp, and for a time you were
35
willing to enjoy his light. “But I have a greater testimony than John’s because of the works that the Father
36
has given Me to accomplish. These very works I am doing testify about Me that the Father has sent Me. The
37
Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me. You have not heard His voice any time, and you haven’t
