2. Now make a simple outline of the chapter. Break it down into the major divisions of thought.
Let’s give it a try. Let’s look at John 1: 1-18 and break it down into two major divisions and give a
                     title to those divisions.

                                                                                                    2
                       1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was
                       with God in the beginning.

Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him
                       3
                                                                                                      4
                                                             5
was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has
                       not understoodit.

                       6
There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify
                                                                                 7
                       concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe.  He himself was not the light;
                                                                                 8
he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming
                                                         9
                       into the world.
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize

                                                                                          12
                           11
him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who
received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—
13 children born not of natural descent nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of
                       God.

                       14
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of
the One and Only who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

                       15
John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes
                                                                          16
after me has surpassed me because he was before me.' " From the fullness of his grace we have
                                                          17
all received one blessing after another. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth
came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Onlywho is at the

                   1. Ask the same questions as in the devotional study.
                       i. What is the main subject of this passage?
ii. Who are the persons revealed in this passage: Who is speaking? To whom is he speaking?
                          About whom is he speaking?
iii. What is the key verse in this passage?
iv. Is there any sin for me to confess and forsake in this passage?
                       v. Is there any command for me to obey in this passage?
vi. Is there any promise for me to claim?
vii. Is there any instruction for me to follow?
viii. Is there a prayer that I should pray?

                   2. Notice that we broke the chapters into paragraphs (should be close to the chapter outline, as a
paragraph contains several sentences about one central thought.) Some study Bibles do this for
you, but some don’t, so you need to do that.
