Commercial law firm Brab- ners has named three chil- dren’s hospices from across the North West as its chosen charities for 2017-18.
Over the next 12 months, the firm’s employees will take part in a variety of fundraising events to raise more than £20,000 for Claire House ( Wirral), Derian House (Chorley) and Francis House (Didsbury), aiming to beat last year’s total.
The three hospices offer a lifeline to hundreds of fami- lies across the North West who are faced with the news that their child is ter- minally ill. They provide spe- cialist nursing care and emotional support to chil- dren with life-limiting or life-threatening illnesses.
The fundraising activities kicked off on Friday 30th June with the firm’s annual Charity Challenge in the Lake District. The event saw teams of employees, clients, friends and family pitted against each other in a se- ries of challenges, including kayaking on Derwent Water lake, a 29-mile bike ride and a 10-mile hike across the Wainwright Mountains.
The event has so far raised £2,907, with the final total expected to reach more than £4,000.
The firm plans to raise funds through a variety of events throughout the year. This in- cludes the return of the ‘Big Idea’, an apprentice-style contest involving teams from each of the firm’s of- fices competing against each other to raise money for charity.
Mark Brandwood, manag- ing partner at Brabners, said: “It’s essential that we give back to the communi- ties in which we live and work and these hospices are
delivering invaluable care right on our doorstep.
“Children’s hospices across the country are challenged with finding the funding they need to deliver such an important service, so choos- ing to support these organ- isations this year was an easy decision. With a num- ber of fundraising events planned we’re looking for- ward to raising as much money as possible for such a good cause.”
Beth Pochin, Corporate Fundraiser at Claire House Children’s Hospice, said: “Brabners offer such amaz- ing commitment to their chosen charities, and we are thrilled that they have cho- sen to support Claire House,
Derian House and Francis House this year. Their sup- port will make a huge differ- ence to local children and families who are going through the toughest of times, helping them to cre- ate special memories to cherish.”
The charities were chosen by Brabners’ employees fol- lowing a vote. The firm has a dedicated charity commit- tee which will organise vari- ous fundraising events over the next 18 months to raise money for the three chil- dren’s hospices.
Last year, Brabners raised more than £20,000 for na- tional homelessness charity, Crisis UK.

WHAT THE PSU DO:
The PSU offers support to people facing legal proceedings without legal representation in civil and family courts. In the next 3 years, 50% of people in England and Wales will experience a civil justice problem. In the last 2 years, the number of times we helped people rose by 107%.
Attending court alone is daunting. Those we support are usually unable to access any formal legal help yet need to be able to present their own case clearly - often facing professional barristers in court. When people are in court tackling hugely emotive subjects, including eviction, bankruptcy and access to children, it is easy to see why our service is invaluable.
We have over 550 trained and experienced volunteers who give free, inde- pendent assistance to 4,500 clients a month. We operate from 15 court cen- tres across England and Wales.
Our aim is to provide immediate support to everyone who asks. We are de- termined to do more to help the growing number of litigants in person but we cannot do that without continuous fundraising. Please donate to sup- port our cause and help even more clients’ access justice.
