The history of the Waldorf Astoria all started with Mr. William Waldorf Astor in 1893. This millionaire opened the 13 story Waldorf hotel on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 33rd street. Four years later in 1897 the Astoria hotel was joined by the 17 story high Astoria hotel owned by the cousin, John Jacob Astor IV.
The legendary Peacock alley connected both hotels, and became a legendary location to see and be seen. By this reason most of the Waldorf Astoria hotels and resorts now, have a peacock alley. In 1929 the Waldorf Astoria was completely broken down, and sold to the developer of the current empire state building.
In 1931 the current Waldorf Astoria opened its doors on the Park Avenue, and was at that time the world’s largest hotel. In 1932 Conrad N. Hilton wrote "The Greatest of Them All" on a photograph of the Waldorf Astoria New York. It was his dream to own this hotel and include it in his prestigious collection of hotels.
In 1949 he realized his dream, he purchased the hotel and extended his version of "the light and warmth of hospitality" to the legendary New York landmark. Today, the hotel is the inspiration for the distinctive group of hotels offering unparalleled service, exquisite accommodations and luxurious experiences. To ensure this the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah created the vision; ‘To be the icon of luxury in the region, creating extraordinary memories and building on our
unique legacy’ by living this vision every day, we will ensure our position of being our vision.
