                was the human Linden still angry with him? Why would humans think robots could harm them?
“We have to go,” said Linden, and Runa nodded. They were in a tiny bunker, with a hatch in the roof. Linden counted to three, pushed the hatch open quickly
and glanced around, and then let it close again.
“All clear,” ze said. “Ready?”
“Ready.”
“Go.” Linden pushed the hatch open again and
leaped out, and Runa after hir. Adam didn’t know what to do, so he followed them out...
Out, and into the world.
Adam knew that the tower where he and Father lived was in a city named Edinburgh, in a country named Scotland. He had maps and pictures of it in his memory stores, and once, on a summer’s day, Father had taken him to the top of the tower and shown him the city for real. Adam remembered dazzling pale sunshine on a busy street, gardens and trees, houses of all different styles and ages, and in the centre a huge mass of ancient volcanic rock – Castle Rock, with mighty Edinburgh Castle on top. He remembered the feeling of wind on his face, and the sounds of the city – traffic, car and bus engines, trains leaving the station, the flittering toot of horns, the crash and clank of building sites, the hum of
