and faded to grey. There was a crack in the side.
Linden led them east for a while, and then south. They walked past broken houses, through collapsed blocks of flats, over decayed and overgrown roads. The sun rose quickly and lit the streets and buildings in pale yellow, but the world remained silent, other than the calls of
birds and animals.
Adam walked with them, staring at everything. “Where are the people?” he asked.
Runa frowned.
“Shut up,” said Linden.
Linden seemed to be in charge. Ze stalked ahead,
testing the ground and watching in all directions, choosing the route, and hir face was drawn into a constant scowl, as if angry, or afraid. The smaller one, Runa, followed without speaking. She was holding an old and cracked screen, and seemed to be scanning for something; occasionally she would look up and check around her, and nod. She looked serious too, but not as worried. Her lips moved as if she was chattering to herself.
Adam noticed their clothing again, the strange mix of plastic and fur sewn together, patched and repatched. They had backpacks too – battered things that had been repaired many times. Linden’s held water
