 Tyrannosaurus rex could outrun you
Scientists once thought that T Y R A N N O S A U R U S could have run faster than an Olympic sprinter, which would have meant that this 6-tonne celebrity would have been an unstoppable hunting machine. But could it R E A L LY run that fast? How can we tell?
Dinosaur footprints have been found all over the world, from the Isle of Skye in the UK to Queensland, Australia, and they can tell us a lot about how dinosaurs moved.
By measuring the ‘stride’ distance between the footprints and having an idea of how big the dinosaur that made the tracks was, palaeontologists can guess how fast the animal was moving.
The further apart the footprints and narrower the track, the quicker the dinosaur! But it might have been difficult to run and walk on the sorts of sand and ground that make good fossils, so there aren’t too many dinosaur trackways, or paths, to investigate.
Depending on how squishy the ground is, the shape of the footprints might change before becoming hard and this can sometimes confuse palaeontologists when they are trying to work out how big the dinosaurs were.
