Dinosaurs only lived on land
OK, clever claws. So there are lots of prehistoric animals that less-than-expert people sometimes mistake for dinosaurs, and you M I G H T already know that pterosaurs (the reptiles that flew in the sky on bat-like wings) and plesiosaurs (the long-necked hunters that swam in the oceans) weren’t actually dinosaurs.
But brand-new fossils show that some dinosaurs were picky when it came to where they liked to live – and not all of them had their feet on the ground.

Although HALSZKARAPTOR had strong legs, which meant it could run well, it spent a lot of its time on the water, like ducks do today. Its spoon-shaped snout at the end of its swan-like neck was jam-packed full of sharp teeth to help it grab on to slippery prey.
If you’re going to spend your time tromping through squishy mud along riverbanks, it helps to have long, spread-out toes to help you distribute your weight, just like wading birds like avocets and moorhens today – and that’s just what the feet of ANZU looked like!
Some dinosaurs liked to live under the ground. ORYCTODROMEUS was a small, herbivorous animal that lived in snug burrows about 2 metres long, and looked after their babies in these cosy homes.
