Baby dinosaurs looked like their parents
A lot of animals (like humans) look very similar to their parents when they are young, just smaller, but some animals only change to look like their parents when they grow up. By studying rare, special fossils, palaeontologists now know some young dinosaurs looked VERY different from their parents.
Most young animals have big eyes – that’s what makes some baby animals look cute to humans. SCIPIONYX is only known from one tiny fossil of a baby – and its large eyes meant it was definitely cute!
Fossils of baby dinosaurs with neck frills
and head horns, like CHASMOSAURUS and PROSAUROLOPHUS, show that these parts of the body didn’t grow bigger until they were older, and that they only had little nubs for horns when they were young.
Some dinosaurs, like ORNITHOMIMUS, were covered in fluffy down as youngsters, and only grew large feathers when they were older.

Growing bigger sometimes means changing the way you move around.
As the Triassic MUSSAURUS grew up,
it went from walking on all four feet to using only two, while the Cretaceous MAIASAURA walked on two feet as a baby but on four when it had grown up.
