Jasmine frowned.“You can’t give her away.You said I could look after her.”
“That’s not what I meant,” said Mum. She gave Jasmine a serious look.“It’s just that roe deer fawns are very difficult to look after. People say they’re one of the hardest wild animals to hand- rear if they’re orphaned.We’ll do our very best, but you’ll need to be prepared for the fact that she might not survive. And if she doesn’t, you absolutely mustn’t blame yourself. Promise me that.”
