Why should I come to Runshaw to study English Language and Literature?
English Language and Literature is a stimulating and varied subject. It is an excellent choice
for students who have enjoyed both areas of English at GCSE level and are just as interested in non-fiction and non-literary writing as they are in great plays and novels.
Our language and literature students achieve excellent examination results and have done so consistently for many years; with a 100% pass rate and a high proportion of students achieving A*-B grades. We are a Grade 1 subject according to Ofsted who assessed our lessons as ‘exciting and lively’ and our success rates as ‘truly outstanding’: five of our students in recent years have even scored in the top five nationally in their A Level examinations!
We go to London on a residential trip each year to visit theatres and the British Library, along with other enrichment, such as:
• Creative Writing Society
• Gifted and Talented groups
• English Society
• Debating Society
The department has a team of talented, well-qualified and committed staff who are passionate about their subject. Many are examiners, whilst others are published authors or hold higher degrees.
What will I study?
Over the two-year A Level course, you will study a novel, a biography, a play, a selection of poetry and an anthology of non-fiction texts.
How is the course assessed?
• 80% examination • 20% coursework
How do I find out more and apply?
