    Why should I come to Runshaw to study History?
History is a traditional A Level providing you with a variety of life skills that will take you to any career area!
Our History department has achieved a
Grade 1 ‘Outstanding’ in the last three Ofsted inspections and your teachers will provide expert knowledge, guidance, and support, and are either examiners or have experience
as examiners.
We offer excellent enrichment through guest lectures and our very own History Journal as part of the History Academy. We also offer study visits to places as diverse as Auschwitz, Westminster and the Imperial War Museum.
What will I study?
You will be able to choose ONE course from the three options:
1. Early Modern History
• The Tudors 1485 - 1603: a broad sweep through the problems of this despotic royal family
• Louis XIV of France 1660 - 1715: examining to what extent Louis XIV created an absolute monarchy from his magnificent palace of Versailles
• The European Witchcraze 1560 - 1660: why was it that European states hounded and persecuted hundreds of thousands of innocent people (mainly women), believing them to be witches?
2. European History
• Britain 1783 - 1885: a broad sweep of the industrial revolution, and the changing face of politics: Pitt, Peel and Disraeli, plus social reform
• Democracy & Nazism: Germany 1918 - 1945: an in-depth study of the rise of the Nazis under the Weimar Republic and the establishment of a totalitarian dictatorship
• Tsarist and Communist Russia 1881 - 1991
3. World History
• USA 1865 - 1975: a sweeping study of the emergence of a dominant global superpower
• The Making of Modern Britain 1951 - 2007: an in-depth study of over fifty years of British post-war boom and affluence, followed by an era of reaction: the world of Wilson, Thatcher, Major and Blair and the changing role of Britain in global affairs
• The Atlantic Slave Trade & the Development of Civil Rights in the USA
How is the course assessed?
The first year of the course will be assessed internally. The A Level includes two written examinations (80%) and coursework (20%) taken in Year 2.
