“If I were a Wiener Dog, I would want to live in Cullman County. I would eat right, get plenty of exercise and dream of being the grand prize winner of the annual Wiener Dog Race during Oktoberfest. Hopefully my human family would enter me in the contest. It would be so much fun to be the center of attention as I race against the peers. I can actually hear kids laughing and see adults cheering as we show off our grand gestures and run like no other Wiener Dog has ever run before!”
One of the greatest activities offered during Cullman’s annual Oktoberfest celebration is the Wiener Dog Race. This allows the beloved wiener dog to show off their talent for racing, entertaining, and making their owners very proud. We all know that the correct name for these charming canines is Dachshund, but our chosen name has always been Weenie Dog or Wiener Dog. Their main objective in
life is supposed to be that ability to catch the scent of badgers, or other burrowing animals, and flush them out. We folks in Cullman County know what the real deal is with these little dogs and that is to run hard and win the Oktoberfest Wiener Dog Race!
The event is now sponsored by Cullman Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism with some much- appreciated help from the Kiwanis Club on event day. The race is categorized by the dog’s age and each age group has a “weener.” There is an entry fee for the proud pooches and all the proceeds are donated to the local animal shelter!
There are other fun things offered for our pets on Oktoberfest Saurday! On this day, all pets are celebrated, not just the Wiener dog. The costume
