and losing family members. Long hour trainings add stress to the students. Some students try to reduce the effect of the stress by joining extra curricullar activities. Many others use teasing each other as an outlet to relese the stress. Some use it over the limit and bully other students.
Teenagers tease each other. But there are times when teasing turns in to the dangerous bullying. Bisbing (2012) elaborates that to be called a bullying, an imbalance of power must exist in an action. The victims have the hard time defending themselves. The power can be physical, social status or popularity. The intention of the harsh behavior is to put down and humiliate the victims. The action is also done again and again. Mutual conflict and single act aggressiveness are not classified as bullying.
This article will elaborate a strategy which has been applied in SMK N 1 Kota Sukabumi Grade 12 Surveying Program. The students of this class are mostly from low income families and average to low academic achievement.
Classroom Implementation
Meri Wallace (2012) suggests several steps schools and teachers can do to prevent bullying, even before it happens. One of them is conducting classroom discussion and activities designed to sensitize and promote self- awareness to the students of the damage of bullying. This education aims at helping students make better, more responsible and positive choices.
The game “crumpling Ijah” is a game to show how damaging bullying can be. It shows bullying effect is irreversible. The expected result is students acknowledge bullying as a dangerous behavior. Acknowledging the harm of bullying is the first step to eradicate bullying altogether.
This technique has been repeated several times and consistently gives significant impact to the students. It raise awareness of how their actions, as mere as calling names, has tremendous irreversible damage. After having English lesson with this technique, students expressed their acknowledgement of bullying and some even apologized to their friends.
The classroom activities are as follow:
1. Students in groups are given pictures of a girl/a boy. Teacher puts
the same picture on the board.
2. The class give names to the picture. Teacher give the picture name
