 TIPS
Asking Questions Effectively
P Decide what your purpose is for asking questions. Your goal determines what type of questions you will ask.
P If you can, write questions in advance. Preparation is key to focused questioning.
P Select the content for questioning. Focus on areas that will be informative and insightful.
P Avoid questions that provide only “yes” or “no” answers. Unless you have more questions to follow, ask questions that encourage detailed answers.
P Avoid questions that contain or imply the answer. Try to anticipate the answers, but avoid steering your team member toward the answer you seek.
P Question with a sincere intent to discover and understand, not to manipulate.
P Ask one final question after everything has been said: “Is there anything else you would like to share with me?”
“You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions.
