LEVI
GUSSY! It wasn't your fault. Everything is gonna to be just
fine. I'm your brother. You can trust me. I promise. We gotta go! We gotta run!
GUS
Gotta go, gotta run, gotta run...
(GUS will continue to say GOTTA RUN moving out of the SPOTLIGHT. LEVI sits back down in the chair placing the CUFFS back on his wrist. LIGHTS rise FULL as GUS is back in his original position. LEVI turns to GUS)
GUS
(As FRANK)
GOTTA RUN. A well to do, fine dressed, Negro man riding
past a farm trots up to a husband and wife sitting on their front porch enjoying a nice evening after supper. His conversation is so good they invite him in for plumb pudding. He introduces himself as Frank... Once in he shows his gratitude by sticking a gun to the wife’s skull as he wraps his arm around her throat asking for all of their treasures in a nice - calm - voice- with no intention of hurting - anyone. He takes the money. Leaves. That man... on the train... when our eyes met... we both knew. We both remembered. I didn’t mean for it to happen but it did. Ain’t nothing nobody can do on it now.
LEVI Frank. Let me speak to Gus.
GUS
(As FRANK)
Speak to Gus? Best friends sometimes become your worst enemy. Old buck Blue would break loose and there was Billy Ray running that cow down over again and again. Teaching everyone of us the secret of the cowboy. How to get the ghost back. Told me his name ain't Billy Ray. Say the Massa gave that too him after he bought him... real name... “Gus Colton.” I ask him where he learned. He say his brother... LEVI... showed him the light.
(This raises LEVI’S attention)
