One day... it was pouring down good. Massa Roy had Billy Ray tied up against a tree giving him a hard lashing because he learned how to read a word. Billy Ray screamed and shouted saying he was sorry and will never ever try to read again. As Massa Roy pulled that whip back one more time...

Just like that Old Buck Blue was off again. Massa Roy
screamed some bad words - raising that whip to take his anger out on Billy Ray who then shouts... I CAN BRING IN OLD BUCK BLUE! Massa Roy lowers that whip - looks Billy Ray in the eyes and says... well then - go get that cow...boy. Billy Ray lowers his arms - and takes off running though the fields. Twenty minutes later - he shows up with Old Buck Blue. Massa Roy spooked. Cant believe it took Billy Ray that short a time to wrangle him in. “How’d you do that!? Massa Roy asked.” “I gave him his ghost back.” He says. Two days Later! BOOM! Lighting! Go get that cow-boy. Billy Ray brings him back in TEN minutes.” How’d you do that again?” “Gave him his ghost back.” Billy Ray got so good at bringing in Old Buck Blue all the other slave owners near by asked Massa Roy if he could teach a few of their slaves how to wrangle in cows. Pretty soon every plantation in South Carolina had two
or three cowboys. I was only a small yougin at the Billy Ray whispered in my ear the hole and corner.

they ghost wasn’t there no more. Knew they death was coming soon - but wanted to live free as much as they can. Lightning strike was a sign from God to be set free - off they went. Billy Ray knew the key was to touch the ghost. To fulfill the missing. To grab hold on to the possibility. To look in the eyes and connect his pain with theirs. Both understanding that no matter how much you fight and struggle - the ghost wants to be satisfied and live free. And if it does that... no matter how much torture you take on the outside - the Ghost will roam loose and make you whole all over again. The cowboys knew that.
