   2023 PRESIDENT
WHAT WE DO MATTERS!
While market forces affect affordability, the opportunity for Texans to realize the dream of homeownership is also significantly dependent upon the ac¬tions of governmental regulations, fees, and processes. Per a study by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), regulations imposed by government at all levels account for 25 percent of the final price of a new single-family home built for sale. You can see the harm that burdensome and unnec¬essary regulations have on the housing industry when you compound that with the fact that, according to the Texas Real Estate Research Center at Texas A&M University, for every $1,000 increase in the cost of a home, roughly 22,000 Texas households are priced out of the market.
The GSABA leadership team along with 40 GSABA members participated in the Texas Association of Builders (TAB) statewide Rally Day on Wednesday, March 29th in Austin at the Capitol. It was a great day for housing, and we met with 14 of our elected officials sharing the barriers to affordable housing and critical legislation that is being considered during the 88th Legislative Session.
We are working diligently to engage with our elected officials on the local, state and national levels. GSABA’s SABPAC, our local Political Action Committee, hosted a fundraiser for Mayor Ron Nirenberg on Wednesday, March 22nd with over 100 members in attendance. We will host another very important luncheon for Councilman Manny Pelaez on Monday, April 3rd at noon. If you want to join us for lunch, please reach out to Kristi for details. Councilman Pelaez has voted with us on every issue for the last several years, and we need your support with a personal contribution.
We will host another very important Reception for Councilwoman Melissa Cabello Havrda in conjunction with Bitterblue on Wednesday, April 5th at the Paesanos on 1604. We must all come together to support the elected officials who support the business community and housing. Please make a personal contribution to these men and women who serve our community and work side by side with us. The Mayor and the entire City Council are up for re-election in May.

We are working with CPS Energy on the transformer shortage and we are also engaging the San Antonio Water Systems (SAWS) top officials and staff to make sure we can serve all new residential developments inside the city limits and in the ETJ. We recently hosted a breakfast with Bexar County to discuss permit delays. Your Government Affairs team has been busy!
We need your support of our government affairs and advocacy issues. Join us at the next Government Affairs meeting at 1pm on Tuesday, April 18th, immediately following the Board meeting.
Remember, it isn’t all work and no play. We have some great events coming up that we hope you and your colleagues will attend. Our Young Professionals Leadership Council (YPLC) is hosting a Crawfish Boil on Friday, May 5th at GSABA in the parking lot, details can be found in this edition of the Builder Brief. Plus, our next Membership Mixer is on May 11th from 5:00-7:00pm at BBQ Outfitters. We hope you can join us.
Thank you for being a member of GSABA. Together, we truly make a difference!
Sincerely,
8 APRIL 2023 | GREATER SAN ANTONIO BUILDERS ASSOCIATION
