OUR GOALS FOR THE NEW YEAR
I just had the pleasure of attending the International Builders Show in Orlando the second week of February. It was so nice to walk the Exhibit Hall and see all the new building products and the latest technology available to Builders and Remodelers.
At the NAHB Board of Directors meeting, there was a survey taken with hundreds of Builders and Remodelers weighing in on the most pressing issues facing the residential construction industry today. Survey results revealed that supply chain challenges are clearly the number one issue our members are facing today. Supply chain delays are increasing our costs and delivery of lumber, steel, plastic piping, copper wire, windows, doors, appliances continue to be an issue for us all.
It was great to hear what our national leadership team is doing to deliver solutions to the global supply chain problems. The NAHB federal government affairs team is educating members of Congress about the extent of the problems. The regulatory affairs and legal teams are seeking remedies through federal agencies and in the courts and the communications group is making sure the public and the press understand the depth of the supply chain problem.
Many of the products we need in the residential construction industry are stuck on cargo ships waiting at ports and numerous products are further delayed by the shortages of factory workers and truck drivers. These delays are costing us all money.
NAHB, through the state and local associations, have been pushing Congress to temporarily remove tariffs on lumber and other imported buildingmaterials. WehavebeenincommunicationwithourCongressional delegation, and they stand ready to help.
Labor is still a critical issue as well but despite the challenges we are all facing, new-home construction and remodeling is a bright spot for our economy and has been throughout the pandemic. NAHB has developed an online resource for our members that has solid strategies for remodelers and single-family homebuilders to utilize to include escalation clauses in contracts, best practices, tips for estimating and material alternatives. You can access this information through your member account at nahb.org/ supplychain.
We have a lot of great events planned for you this year at GSABA. We hope that you will join us for the Young Professional Leadership Council’s (YPLC) Crawfish Boil that will be held at GSABA on Friday, April 1st. We hope to start hosting our in-person Membership Mixers again this summer!
