LOOKING BACK ON THE INTERNATIONAL BUILDERS SHOW
Regina and I just returned from the International Builders Show (IBS) hosted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) in Las Vegas. The Builders’ Show is the largest light construction trade show in the world and this year, there were 1,800 Exhibitors covering more than 678,000 square feet of the Las Vegas Convention Center. It had been several years since I attended IBS and I was really impressed with the exhibits, leadership classes and education workshops.
Dr. Dietz, NAHB’s Chief Economist who spoke to GSABA members at our local Housing Forecast in January, shared additional information on the national economy highlighting labor and material shortages. NAHB staff provided the top ten trade categories that have critical labor shortages. Carpenters led the list followed by bricklayers/masons, framing crews, plumbers, concrete providers/installers, electricians, HVAC techs, drywall, flooring installers and painters.
There was additional discussion on the cost and availability of labor, but Dr. Dietz also highlighted the increase in material costs, the availability of developed vacant lots, overreaching building code adoption by local municipalities and the rising cost of insurance which are forcing new home prices higher. The good news is that mortgage rates are stabilizing and helping drive new home sales. The forecast for the remainder of 2024 and 2025ispositive. Weshouldseeareductionininterestratesandanincrease in new home sales across the nation later this year and next.
Kristi and I also attended the Presidents Leadership Council meetings where local Presidents and Executive Officers from across the country gathered for breakfast to talk about NAHB as a Federation. I know what our national association does for the local and state associations on the government affairs and advocacy fronts, but I was impressed with the amount of time and investment that NAHB is making in Workforce Development.
At the President’s Council, Tim Lansford, a Leadership Perception Specialist, gave a Keynote Presentation called Communicate Like a Leader. We both enjoyed the session and came away with a lot of good information on how to have impactful communication in our leadership roles. Speaking of leadership roles, we have a spot for you to get involved!
