Melissa Kane, Brevard County’s 2015-16 social studies teacher of the year, has
received the Florida Council of Social Studies’ Dr. Theron Trimble Florida Teacher of the
Year Award.
Kane teaches fifth grade at West Melbourne Elementary School for Science. As a
nominee, she submitted a portfolio of work that demonstrated how she developed
or used instructional materials creatively and effectively; incorporated innovative and verified instructional strategies and techniques; and utilized the interrelated
themes of culture, time, people, places, continuity, and change. She also had to
verify how her lessons foster a spirit of inquiry and skills related to acquiring, organizing, and processing.

Marshall, principal. “She believes in true student engagement and uses cooperative learning strategies in order to meet the needs of her students by bringing social studies to life through unique and innovative lessons.”
