Going Back to College as an Adult?
An Adult Learner Speaks Out
By Alice Cole Miller
As an adult learner, the greatest obstacle that I had to overcome was my self-consciousness. I wanted a college degree, but I believed that
I would be the oldest student in class and
that I would be uncomfortable with a younger age group around me. Little did I know that the average age of students
attending adult education
courses was 40 years of age.
I was 45 years old when I
started pursuing my Bachelor’s
degree, and I only transferred in
15 college credits from previous
institutions that I had attended.
That meant that I needed to
earn 105 credits to graduate.
I was lucky to be able to earn
30 credits from experiential
learning (college credits awarded for outside classroom experience) which cut one year’s worth of courses from the amount that I needed to graduate.
That degree changed my life. I am now in a professional job that I love, and I owe it all to overcoming the fear of returning to school. I have since earned a master’s degree which has enabled me to teach adult learners pursuing their dreams of a higher education. I would encourage anyone who wants to earn a college
degree to meet with an academic advisor to map out a course of action to realize that dream.
