“I was by the gate by the media center with Deputy Jackie Falvey and there was this older man standing outside by the gate so I approached him, and he wanted to use the media center to check out a book he read when he was a child,” Ingratta said. “When I told the man he couldn’t do that, he proceeded to get very angry and yell at me, I don’t know if he had dementia but he was most likely
mentally ill.”
Surveillance cameras have also been proven to be
effective at Edgewood, in one case before the new security measures were in place, a salesman walked onto campus trying to talk to the teachers, and the cameras had captured his face so it was easier for law enforcement to recognize and contact him, informing that he could not come onto the school campus without an appointment in the future. Luckily, the salesman was not a person who was intending to harm anyone, but the fact that he was able to access the school campus means a gunman would have easily been able to. Now, the only two entry points to campus are through the office or the parking lot gate, which are both monitored by the front office staff. Along with the new buzzer and call-box system, the school administration has multiple cameras and other measures that students are not told about in order to protect their safety.
“Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Parkland are all heartbreaking tragedies, and they’ve changed the way teachers have to think as well as students,” Ingratta said. “The one part of my job when I first became a principal that kept me up at night was thinking about if we had all the right equipment to keep everyone safe. We are still actively working on improving security and student safety and that is our number one priority.”
