Ms. Shaw
Ms. Stephanie Shaw, one of the newest additions to the Edgewood Faculty, is an Instructional Assistant for the Visually Impaired. Most people do not know what exactly she does or who she is. A big part of Shaw’s job is translating
books from English to Braille. She types up passages from textbooks, transfers them into a Braille program, and prints the pages out.
Shaw has lived in Brevard since she was in school. She attended West Shore Junior Senior High School before getting her Special Needs degree. Then, she worked for two years at Quest Elementary School, where she worked with two visually impaired students.
Many of the teachers that Shaw had during high school are now her colleagues at Edgewood.
“Mrs. Ingratta was my assistant principal, Mrs. Krehbiel was my physics teacher in 11th grade, and I had Señora Martinez for two years,” Shaw said.
Shaw also is the dance team coach at West Shore. Going back and forth between the two schools can be hectic, but she supports Edgewood through it all.
DEPUTY TURBO
Deputy David Turbeville, known as Deputy Turbo, is Edgewood’s new School Resource Officer. Many students have seen him
patrolling the hallways, helping with fire drills, and running the bus loop. Before coming to Edgewood, Deputy Turbo held several positions within law enforcement. He attended Cocoa Beach High School before becoming a part of law enforcement. In school, he was very active in clubs and teams.
He played football for his first two years of high school and wrestled during his junior and senior years. He was active in the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, and he competed in IRONMAN, a long distance triathlon race. He was also in the writer’s club and sang in his high school chorus.
“I did all kinds of stuff,” Turbo said. “I was very active in high school.”
This is his first job as a School Resource Officer, or SRO. He worked for the Cocoa Beach Police Department for four and a half years. Then, he moved to the Sheriff’s office for better opportunities for movement. A year and a half ago, he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. He applied for the position of SRO because he wanted a change of pace.
“I think it’s going to be something that I try to stay in for a few years at least. I’m enjoying it, and I’m planning to stay with it for a long time,” Turbo said.
