Title: Restorative Practices
Description: Restorative Practices (RP) are practices that are used to build relationships and to restore or repair harm that has occurred between staff and students, students and students and staff or staff. There are a range of proactive RP and reactive RP that can be used. Best practice is to use the proactive RP of affective statements and circles to develop relationships between staff-students and students-students. Once the proactive practices are in place, then schools should identify which of the reactive practices (i.e. chats, conference, and reintegration) the school needs for training and then implementation. Proactive RP affective statements should be used by staff daily and circles should occur at least weekly averaging 15-30 minutes per a circle. Reactive RP takes more time to implement and will occur as needed as incidents arise. Schools should have at least two facilitators trained to implement the reactive practices.
