Rockledge High Visits Port for Inspiration
During a recent professional development day, Rockledge High staff visited Port Canaveral to get a taste of what its maritime academy students experience through the career and technical education (CTE) program.
Due to the expansion of Port Canaveral, there is an immediate need to train
and develop the next generation of career minded students interested in
all aspects of port operations, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, and security, according to resource teacher, James Johnson. The three-year CTE maritime program is designed to give students
a broad understanding about the maritime field. The program advisors are

individuals from the Propeller Club of Port Canaveral (Harbor Pilot’s Association), Cove Merchant Organization, U.S. Coast Guard, maritime academies and business owners.
On professional development day, teachers in
all content areas worked on standards-based learning and how to incorporate all the aspects of their Port Canaveral experience into their curriculum. “Our goal is a far-reaching expansion of college and career opportunities for all of our students,” said Principal Vickie Hickey. “We want to ensure that all of our CTE programs, AVID, and Cambridge programs allow for a space of integration, allowing all of our students to find a pathway that fits their interests and abilities.”
