Bike Riders
• Always wear a helmet that is fitted and secured properly (required by law if <16).
• Come to a complete stop at intersections.
• Ride in a straight line.
• Look over your shoulders for oncoming traffic. • Use hand signals when turning.
• Watch for opening car doors and other hazards.
Bus Riders
• Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop and
only approach when doors are opened by the bus driver.
• Stay out of the danger zone. Stay 10 feet away from the bus at all times except for loading and unloading. Quickly step away from the bus once you step off.
• Hold on to the handrail when getting on the bus and make sure all backpack straps are tucked in.
• Tell the driver if something falls near or under the bus - don’t pick it up.
• If seat belts are available, buckle up.
• When crossing the street, always cross in front of the bus.
As school gears up, it’s important to discuss traffic safety and the rules of the road with your kids. Parents and motorists must realize that children are not small adults. Until children are at least 10 or 11 years old, they have limited developmental skills to handle complex traffic situations. Whether they walk, bike, or ride the bus to school, your role in educating your students before school starts is just as important as buying his or her supplies. Think of it as another item on the list to check off. Take some time to review these simple rules of the road with your student.
Walkers
• Use sidewalks or walk against traffic, and always use the crosswalk.
• A marked crosswalk at signalized intersections is the safest place to cross.
• Look left, right, then left again before crossing. • At intersections, don’t forget to check over
your shoulder for turning vehicles.
• Avoid texting and using headphones while walking.
• Be visible - wear bright colors, reflective accessories such as belts, jewelry and clothes.
Most importantly, set the example for your kids by practicing these rules of the road and abide by all traffic laws as a motorist.
