Commission Recognizes Achievements
of Retiring Assistant Library Services Director Susan Szymula
By a 5-0 vote, Brevard County’s Board of County Commissioners wished Assistant Director of Library Services’ Susan Szymula a happy retirement after 30 years of dedicated public service.
Szymula’s retirement was effective Aug. 1, and she also received a send-off from County staff and friends on Friday, July 28, with a Happy Retirement Party at the Catherine Schweinsberg Rood Central Library in Cocoa.
In a resolution adopted by the Commission at its July 25 meeting, Szymula was recognized for numerous promotions, leadership and dedication to Brevard County’s library system. She began her career with Brevard County in August 1987 as a Librarian II and head of the Reference Department at the Cocoa Public Library. In November 1989, she was promoted to Library Director of the South Mainland/Micco Library by Catherine Schweinsberg, and two years later to be the director of the Meadowlane Public Library (now known as the West Melbourne Public Library), where she served for seven years, earning accolades from staff, public, and the Library Boards of both libraries.
In May 1998, Szymula was promoted to be the director of the Law Library, where she served for ve years, and so well that she was elected to serve as Vice President/ President-elect of the Association
of Florida State Court & County Law Libraries in October 2002. In January 2003, she became training coordinator for Library Services, a role she served in for nearly a decade, and in which her passion and talent as a teacher was revealed. Susan taught not only library staff, but also staff from all Brevard County Departments, becoming an integral part of the Human Resources’ Covey Training team. It was during
that time she also began leadership of the “Ask a Librarian” program, and the library’s eBook system, which has grown dramatically under her care. After serving for a year as the director of the Port St. John and Mims/Scottsmoor Public Library, Szymula was promoted in January 2013 to Library Area director, overseeing seven Libraries, and then she was promoted again in 2014 to assistant library services director.
The resolution stated: Brevard County Libraries would not be where they are today if not for Susan Szymula.
