Esta organización no era la convencional, normalmente la cocina estaba debajo del res- taurante, y en el Palace demostró su idoneidad respondiendo a la experiencia del promotor en otros hoteles. No cabe duda de que la a nada combinación de espacios en la planta baja del edi cio es parte de su éxito, ya que permite la celebración de numerosos actos públicos, ajenos al funcionamiento estrictamente hotelero, sin interferir en la tranquilidad de los huéspedes, combinando las funciones del hotel de lujo con las de un centro de atracción en la vida social y cultural de la ciudad.
El jardín de Invierno es la pieza más hermosa de los interiores del edi cio. Un gran espacio
de planta sensiblemente circular, sostenido por columnas dobles, que sustentan una gran cúpu- la de vidrieras de colores iluminadas por la luz natural durante el día, ya que se encuentra en
el centro del gran patio de manzana al que dan las habitaciones interiores. Las proporciones y la diafanidad del espacio producen una inusual sensación de sosiego, al tiempo que la irregula- ridad de los espacios perimetrales dan variedad y animación al entorno. Las alabanzas de escri- tores, artistas y usuarios al jardín de Invierno del Palace son constantes desde la inauguración del hotel en 1912. En pocas ocasiones parecen tan justi cadas como en este caso, en el que la calidad de los espacios arquitectónicos y de su organización obtiene la aprobación unánime de especialistas y usuarios.

The Winter Garden is the loveliest part of the building’s interior. It is a large, circular space with double columns supporting a large dome of stained glass that is illuminated by natural light during the day, as it is located in the centre of a large interior courtyard on to which the hotel’s interior rooms look. The proportions and diaph- anous quality of the space create a special atmos- phere of tranquillity, while the irregularity of the perimeter spaces o er variety and liveliness to
the surrounding area. The praise of writers, artists and guests of the Palace’s Winter Garden has been constant since the hotel’s inauguration in 1912. On few occasions has such praise been as justi ed as it is in this case, where the quality of the archi- tectural spaces and their organisation have won unanimous acclaim from specialists and guests.
The sketches have been preserved that served to realise the decoration of the di erent halls of the original Palace. We may view the drawings made by the team of interior designers commissioned with tting out the interior spaces, one of the most important tasks for the hotel’s completed image. Thanks to the sketches and photographs, today we may see the Neptuno, Cortes and Francés halls, as well as the luxury suites, just as they were in 1912. The distribution and names of these public spaces have been modi ed over time.
