THE BORDER BRITISH BLUE CLUB REPORT 2023
What another incredible year for the breed with blues dominating shows and highflying prices at
Carlisle, the main event for the club in May. Breed records
were matched and broken by two entries from Kevin
Watret’s Solway View herd at the Border British Blue Club’s
Spring Show and Sale at Harrison and Hetherington’s
Borderway Centre on Friday and Saturday, 12 and 13 May,
Bulls met a particularly strong trade throughout with no
fewer than 10 breaking the five-figure barrier as the
average increased by more than £1400 compared to the
2022 sale. Heifers again proving that they are wanted with
an increase on average by £700 on the year.
The Herd competition was judged by Danny wyllie this year
with another excellent entry all round with most herds
winning a prize. Top honour went to the Stonebyres herd
winning overall.
Thanks again to Danny for taking his time to look round
the herds.
Border British Blue Autumn Show & Sale was a smaller
entry but another good show of stock
Tom Maudsley - Little bank Herd was the judge on the day,
tapping out Criffel View Romeo, from David & Lesley Watret
as Champion, who went on to sell for 7,000gns. Followed
closely by Almeley Raikonen at 6,500gns.
Females sold to a top of 5,500gns for Top Side Sabrina
from Ross & Elaine Pattinson.
Borderway Agri Expo now the biggest blue calf show in the
country and what a show of calves it was. Male Champion
went to Pendle Special Edition, from the Hartley family
with Reserve going to Top Side Lucky from Ross & Elaine
Pattinson.
Supreme Champion
was won by the female
champion Trent Valley
Sassy Lassy from Chal
Parsons, with Reserve
going to Top Side Snowy
from Ross & Elaine
Pattinson.
The Young Handler class, the most competitive class of the
day, saw Katie Aiken take the champion.
Our breed is really on a high at the minute with blue cattle
wanted up and down the country and long may this
continue.
I would like to thank our secretary Elaine for all her hard
work throughout the year and I would like to wish the
newly elected Chairman, Dean Saunders, all the best for
the year to come.
