sexes, as well as their freedom and claim of independence - as was the message of the United States of
America.
The state of Connecticut and local communities have taken an interest in the restoration of the two
houses which still stand on 528-60 Main Street, Bridgeport, Connecticut. This site has the potential to
reach national attention as well as international recognition by UNESCO (The United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as it fulfills up to three different criteria for Cultural
World Heritage. With work toward restoration planning for the houses and additional research necessary
to uphold the historical and cultural value, the Freeman Houses are worth consideration of investment by
national organizations for the preservation and protection of historical sites; especially those
underrepresented cultures and peoples. The purposes of this project are outlined below as the primary
mission, vision, and values possessed.
i. MISSION
To provide information and reasoning as to why the Mary and Elizabeth Freeman Houses must
come to national attention and inclusion UNESCO’s World Heritage List. To urge future
investments toward detailed and educated research concerning the Freeman House for the
creation of a proposal for UNESCO.
ii. VISION
With the inclusion of the Freeman Houses to the World Heritage list, the state and Connecticut,
the deep South, the black population, women, other minority groups, and Americans as a whole
will have a site that is representational of the perseverance and success of discriminated peoples.
The site will educate the public (national and international) of the past generational challenges,
garner an appreciation for these lesser-known founders of today’s America, and will encourage
current advancements against discrimination for the future of America.
