The United States is experiencing a
renewed interest in natural and
alternative medicine, while the use of
traditional Andean medicine is declining
in Peru. The use of essential oils in the
United States to treat anxiety and
depression and the use of rituals and
psychotropic plants to treat culturally-
bound mental and emotional illnesses
are not necessarily comparable, but do
provide insight into each culture’s
respective outlook on health. By
looking at what some aspects of both
cultures use to treat anxiety and
depression, one can identify
commonalities, differences, and areas
to grow on both sides.
