White Lodge In Richmond Park
Richmond remained largely an area of agricultural land until the 18th Century. It was at this point in history that White Lodge was built in what is now known as Rich- mond Park, as a hunting lodge for King George II.White Lodge was followed by a number of other impressive houses and by the late 18th Century Richmond, with its clean air and beautiful location by the River Thames, had become a very fashionable place to live.
Larkfield Lodge On Selwyn Estate
The largest house to be built in Richmond during the 18th Century was Larkfield Lodge, after which Larkfield Road was named and was built on a part of what was known as the Selwyn estate, owned by Charles Selwyn since 1720. During 1770,William Selywn, the nephew and heir of Charles Selwyn, had a large house on the south side of what is now known as the Lower Mortlake Road.The house was Larkfield Lodge and was one of only two mansions on Lower Mortlake Road during the 18th Century.The other was Lumley Lodge which was built in 1762 for John Boddington.
