6.6 African Reading Cultures and Intellectual History Project
The Archives and Special Collections Section continued to deliver a specialised service of a high standard during 2016 to researchers not only from Unisa and South Africa, but also to visiting scholars from abroad. The Archives assisted a Fulbright Scholar from Yale University, who visited the Archives throughout 2016 to do research on African Reading Cultures and Intellectual History.
6.7 The Unisa History and Memory Project
The Unisa history website states that:
Unisa is the direct descendant of South Africa’s rst university — the University of the Cape of Good Hope (UCGH), which was created in 1873 by an act of the Cape Colony’s Parliament [...]. Unisa’s history spans the entire modern history of South Africa, with its tumultuous shifts from colonialism into apartheid and then democracy. Throughout, Unisa has mirrored the country’s contradictions, upholding successive state ideologies while opening the world of academic learning to opponents of the state — most famously, the imprisoned Nelson Mandela.
Since the beginning of the project, the Archives and Special Collections section has been involved in identifying sources for the compilation of the o cial history of Unisa from 1873 to the present. Even though the project is still ongoing, guests can explore the archival submissions and contact the Unisa Archives directly to license material. The Archives and Special Collections section is proud to be part of this historical project.
6.8 Thabo-Mbeki Presidential Library
Within the signed agreement between the Thabo Mbeki Foundation and Unisa the Deed of Donation of the Collection for the Thabo Mbeki Presidential Library (TMPL) had been signed in 2016. Thabo Mbeki Foundation and Unisa Board (TMFU) approved the integration of the TMPL operations into the Unisa Library, the required structure was developed in collaboration with Organizational Development and approved. TMFU Board also approved the in-house digitization of the collections.
7. Contribution to Research, Teaching and Learning 7.1 Research/Publishers’ Workshops
The Unisa Library, in collaboration with the College of Graduate Studies, organised and hosted two publishers’ workshops to encourage researchers, students and academics to publish. The workshops shared valuable and educational information such as the criteria publishers look for when selecting material for publication, and the submission and review processes. The Library also collaborated with the Research Department and organised a workshop on research rankings and indicators, and an authors’ workshop.
