62 MÆT LANKA

At the announcement of security measures,
We were relying firmly upon our merits.
Discouraged and sad, our thoughts took us back to the great city of Keng Tung,
Sad but willing to go to Lanka while our means were very modest. (Verse 75)

The lack of resources obliged pilgrims to live on the deck while fortunate
passengers lived in cabins. They were, therefore, exposed to the weather, which hurt
        them a lot.

We did not have much money,
But we had faith. No matter ! Dead or alive, we wanted first to see the great city
And worship the relics of the Buddha.
We were with the coolies who kept up the fire. (Verse 77)

Previously accustomed to living in their monastery, where they were respected
by the faithful, be they humble peasants or princes, the monks discovered for the first
time real life and its inequality, which distressed them a bit.

In this precarious situation, we tried, however, to be in good spirits.
The ash and dust soiled us and we used bundles of wood for pillows,
On the ship, the atmosphere was very gloomy.
Those who had means were happier than us. (Verse 78)

In the morning, we had to quickly get up and gather our personal effects.
Standing and aligned, we have to pack and carry them with us
While the coolies cleaned the ship
With a water pump, everywhere. (Verse 80)

Our belongings were wet every day.
This was so during the entire trip.
Listen, O ye men and women,
The ship voyage was not as comfortable as it was thought. (Verse 82)

The wish of every Buddhist is to attain the Nirvæ◊a, which annihilates all
suffering, but the way to reach it is strewn with obstacles and the mere mortal had great
difficulties to overcome. Faith in the teaching of the Buddha and the observance of the
precepts are nevertheless a first stage leading to the Supreme Bliss.

The comfort was rudimentary, it was necessary to show perseverance
And have the faith to take the path leading to the Nirvæ◊a.
These lines recount the sufferings endured on the ship
With all the details on what had happened. (Verse 83)

The venerable monks were not accustomed to travel by sea.
During the crossing, some felt sick, others were sitting with mouth wide open.
