                                                                      TYING LOOPS

3 Turn over the rope, and start the third tuck under the remaining
                          strand.

4 Continue tucks in an over-and-under pattern.

An Eye Splice is used to make a permanent loop in three-strand
rope. It retains all of the strength of the rope, making it stronger than
a regular loop knot. It is sometimes tied tightly around a protective
thimble to protect the inside of the loop from abrasion. Each strand is
usually tucked three times for natural fiber ropes, and up to five is
sometimes used for more slippery synthetics. Sometimes the strands
are thinned out after each level of tucks to taper the splice.
