Postvention to Prevention – A Roadmap to Developing a Postvention Response Team
Presented by Katherine C. Sperry, LCSW, Suicide Prevention Program Supervisor, Department of Veterans Affairs
With nearly 46,000 deaths by suicide annually in the United States, the need for available and established postvention teams is crucial. For every death by suicide, 135 people are impacted. There have been multiple studies indicating that the closer one is to the individual that died by suicide, statistically that individual is at an elevated risk of suicide.
Postvention efforts focus on not only family and friends of the deceased but also the providers and community at large. This workshop will educate on postvention, give examples of postvention resources, provide a roadmap for the development of a successful postvention team and will address appropriate documentation and how postvention teams differ from crisis response teams.
Closing Session - Building A Culture of Equity in Suicide Prevention
Presented by Victor Armstrong, MSW, Chief Diversity Officer, RI International
Equity has become a major topic of discussion of late, but without intentionality, equity can become nothing more than a trendy topic. There are unique challenges faced by historically marginalized communities as it pertains to suicide prevention. Discuss the importance of embedding equity into the work of suicide prevention, including defining the objective, identifying the essential elements, and exploring the challenges and pitfalls in applying the “lens of equity” both within an organization and within a system.
