1 NPで ‘(it) is NP and...’ : te-form of noun + copula
This form is the te-form of the copula です. A te-form connects two closely related events or attributes. Because it does not carry its own tense information, its tense-related interpretation is subject to the information at the end of the utterance. Not having its own tense information means that the connected sentences are semantically closely related.

レストランは すぐそばです。+ べんりです。→ レストランはすぐそばで、べんりです。
‘The restaurant is nearby and it’s convenient.’
たなかさんは、ジョージタウンだいがくのがくせいで、いちねんせいです。
たなかさんは、ジョージタウンだいがくのがくせいで、いちねんせいでした。

だいじょうぶ、きれい、たいへん、だめ、べんり (convenient)、ふべん (inconvenient)、 しずか (quiet)、etc. are called na-adjectives. They are called na-adjectives because, as in きれいなまち ‘beautiful town’, they appear with な when modifying nouns. (See Lesson 4, Section (D) for further information on this.)
Na-adjectives have different conjugation patterns from adjectives that end in i- (i.e., i- adjectives) such as おおきい、あたらしい、うるさい, etc.
They conjugate like nouns.
