Smith Barry Academy (SBA)
is named after Lieutenant
Colonel Robert Smith Barry
who, in 1916, developed new
theories on flying instruction to
improve the quality of flying
skill on the front line in WWI—
began the journey that led to the birth of the Central Flying
School of the RAF. Smith Barry went on to develop the Gos-
port tube, to improve cockpit communication between instructor
and student—who better to name the R&D arm of CFS?
SBA, part of the Development and Delivery Wing (D&D Wg) of
CFS, is the home of Aircrew Instructor Training, and Research
and Development into innovation of fg trg instruction and human
performance. It also owns and maintains AP3456.
Smith Barry Academy is made up of 11 personnel including 7
Service (Regular and Reserve) and 4 Civil Servants.
