  READING LITERACY
This year saw the
students engage in several reading initiatives.
Our Own Reads - A whole school initiative that began in
the ‘Year of Reading’ in 2017, continued with full vigour with students, teachers, leaders as well as support staff reading during Circle Time in the morning.
In line with Our Own Reads, the ‘Our Own Writes’ activity was initiated this year across phases. Aptly named ‘Pret-a-Picture’, it was a take on interpreting visual images. A uniform visual shared across phases received interesting interpretations from students and teachers.
A fun activity created by teachers to encourage vocabulary in
the
Kindergarten
was the ‘What’s the Password?’ Any
child wanting to go out of the class or enter the class had
to pronounce the word of the day correctly and only then was given the exit pass.
The ‘Reading Readiness Programme’ in the Middle School focussed on strengthening comprehension skills among students. Students were tested on comprehension, spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary.
A ‘Reading Station’ was created in the Arabic Niche area to
encourage
children to read books
during their substitution periods. Books for the reading station were donated by students.
One of the challenges was to read as many books as possible from a wide range of genres provided in the school diary list. Across the school, students who read maximum books were awarded notes of appreciation.
