A drop of water from the lake
Pages of the
yellow book
These pages resonate through
me
Telling me of stories hidden deep beneath Somewhere in the pages of history
Or somewhere in a magical realm
Sometimes I am a weary soldier
Trudging home from a forsaken war
Sometimes I wield a sword
And talk of noble natures
Sometimes I find myself
Stuck in a tale of splendour
Of adventures galore
Of the Kings and Queens
And their ambitious dreams
Of secret lairs
And the troubled sea prayers
Of the Mariners in despair
The pages of the yellow book
Continue to resonate through me
And pull me deep within its stories, underneath.
Kulsoom Kamil Khan - 12L
A thought crosses her mind: She could be anything she wants to be; all she needs is a drop of water from the lake. She imagines a stage, the bright surface beckoning her forward. She dreams of walking towards it, a microphone in her hand. ‘Spread your message’, she thinks. She is ecstatic as she watches the audience applaud, their eyes glistening with inspiration. She wants to be their inspiration.
“Lila!”
She is brought back to reality just as fast as she had left it. Her mother continues to bellow her name. To others, the calls would seem alarming, like an emergency. But Lila, now ten, is used to her mother’s calls.
Seven years of deprivation and aspiration. Oh, what a long seven years it has been.
Lila follows the same routine, mostly consisting of chores. Carrying heavy buckets over long distances has become a thing of ease. Two hours later, the volunteers from ‘Think Good’, a non- profit organisation arrive, delivering food and water to everyone in the camp.
Not very hungry, Lila sits next
to her brothers, peering through
the water in her ‘Think Good’
bottle. She intently observes the
soft light from the bulb overhead refracting and creating dancing patterns. Lila enters dreamland once again, where she can be anything and do anything. Ah! There is the stage. There is she, enrapturing the minds of thousands of people, speaking, educating, changing the world. “Lila!”
Sighing, she pulls herself up and goes to fetch some water from the buckets as her mother asks her to. Scooping the mug of water, she pours it into the bottle. She twists the cap closed and straightens, catching sight of the cracks in the earth. This drought might just kill them all one day.
But Lila dares to dream. She dreams of her revival. Perhaps... if only she had a drop of water from the lake.
She tightens her grip on the bottle and heads back to her tent.
