Abstract
Along with the containerized revolution is the introduction of multimodal transport with the ability
to combine different modes of transport to create a closed transport chain, transporting door to door,
with the benefits of cost and shipping time. However, in Vietnam, the application of this advanced type
of transport still faces many difficulties and limitations due to policy mechanisms, transport
infrastructure, transportation technology as well as the construction of transport arrangements. The
article, studying theoretical issues about multimodal transport; characteristics of goods transported on
major transport corridors in northern Vietnam; conditions for implementation both in terms of legal and
practical basis. It, then, proposes suitable multimodal transport models for each transport corridor and
region of northern Vietnam.
