OF THE CRYSTAL COAST
As the early “center” of North Carolina, coastal North Carolina (and Carteret County in particular) has a long history as a vital, visual arts community. Its proximity to other important cities of the mid-Atlantic, abundant resources, moderate climate, brilliant light and beautiful scenery have attracted people to this region for the past three centuries. It became, and continues to be, a haven for creative minds who are inspired by the natural beauty that surrounds us.
The diversity of the various people who have settled here on the Crystal Coast is reflected in a wide variety of creative expression, some of which is unique to our area. Whether it be fine art, crafts, folk art or decoy carving, all can be found from Harkers Island to the north to the historic fishing town of Swansboro to the south. Early settlers needed to produce most of what they had; therefore, most of their creative efforts were in ornamentation of functional items that were to be used in their homes or for daily activities. As time progressed and the population began purchasing manufactured goods or items made by others, artistic efforts became more specific to decorating or beautifying homes and as a recreational activity.
Over time, and as people began leaving farms to work elsewhere during the Industrial Revolution, there was a developing middle class with more leisure time and disposable income. Along with this cultural shift, creative people sought the opportunity to produce finer forms of expression through painting and other activities. More people studied art in formal programs in places of learning, many of which were then attracted to the scenic beauty along our immediate coast.
Generations later, the migration to coastal Carteret County continues for many of the same reasons the early settlers had. As our population has grown so, too, has the art community, which is more diverse than ever. This art community derives its support from local teachers, schools, institutions, galleries, framers, collectors and the community as a whole with festivals and events throughout the year. While visiting the Crystal Coast, why not take some time to enjoy the rich, artistic heritage we have to share? Visit a local gallery or museum in our area.
