* KGB stands for Komitat Gosudarstvennoi Bezopasnosti (Committee for State Security). It is one arm of the
Soviet espionage apparatus, the other being the GRU, or Glavnoye Razvedyvatelnoye Upravlenie, the Soviet
Military Intelligence. The KGB is the successor to the Cheka, OGPU, NKVD, MVD and other initials used over
the years to designate the often reorganized, purged and renamed Soviet secret police and espionage network.
