JASON
Up the driveway from my home lived two retired nurses. Their constant companion was a german shepherd named Jason. Every day when I drove up the driveway and passed their home, Jason was waiting for me. I would roll down the window and he exacted a toll from me in the form of a dog- gie biscuit. Thus, we developed a close friendship. Closer than I thought, I found out later.
When my mother passed away, and I returned home, I went down to my pond and sat on the bank to heal my spirit. After awhile, I heard the soft padding of foot-steps on the leaf covered trail behind me. It turned out they were not foot- but paw-steps. Jason, who in all of the many years past had never, ever ventured down to my home, had done so. He eased him- self to my side and sat down. I put my arm around him and accepted his comforting gesture. I guess he considered me a lost lamb in need of a little shepherding.
