About Cayman
George Town is a good start for your tour, with plenty of Cayman’s iconic buildings dotting the destination’s capital, most of which are still in use today. The George Town Public Library
is a great example of the old and new seamlessly working in tandem, the original library having been built in
1939 and opened a year later, and its successor, a spacious and modern facility, built in 2009. The Cayman Islands Museum is another iconic building, Cayman’s oldest public building that originates back to the 1800s. Cayman’s Legislative Assembly, the heart of local Government, was built in 1972 and was the first poured concrete building in Cayman. It got a much-needed extension in 2004.
Cayman is a country filled with churches, such as George Town’s Elmslie Memorial Church, which once dominated the George Town water front, and the Bodden Town Seventh Day Adventist
The Cayman Islands has developed its own unique style of architecture over the years, with the materials and designs available at any one time dictating how our buildings would be constructed. It’s definitely worth touring the island to spot some impressive building designs that include buildings created a century ago all the way to the contemporary designs of today.
Church, a stone-clad church located further out east. Former ship-builder and architect Rayal Bodden was a prolific designer of Cayman’s iconic buildings, including the Elmslie Memorial Church, the Library and also the George Town Post Office, and he used the upturned hull of a boat as his inspiration for the ceilings of these buildings. Make sure you also check out the gorgeous old Caymanian cottages that are sadly becoming fewer in numbers nowadays, located from West Bay to East End, a picturesque reminder of days gone by.
If you are looking for some excellent examples of contemporary architecture then look no further than Camana Bay,
a town in its own right that has cleverly taken the Caymanian design aesthetic into the 21st Century. See how the town’s designers have incorporated cool shades, intricate lighting, useful pathways, gorgeous courtyards and vegetation into their public spaces for everyone to enjoy.
