About Cayman
Pedro St James, Cayman’s ‘birthplace of democracy’
Historic Fort George in George Town
PEDRO ST JAMES
Another important historical location is Pedro St James, which is situated a little further out east at Savannah. Pedro St James is known in the Cayman Islands as the ‘birthplace of democracy’ as it was here, on 5 December 1831, that the decision was made to form the first elected parliament. Four years later,
on 3 May 1835, in the same location, the proclamation ending slavery in the British Empire was issued.
At the site, visitors can enjoy walking around the magnificent Great House, originally built in the 18th Century and carefully restored to its former glory.
In its heyday, the Great House was a
particularly impressive and stately sight among its neighbours, with its three stories that stood out among other single level
homes in the location. A beautifully built property, the Great House consisted
of 18 inch-thick stone walls, breezy wooden verandahs, large shuttered windows, and slate imported from England that created the roof and floors. Now the house has come alive again, filled with furniture and artifacts of the period creating a living history to be enjoyed by all.
At the site you can also take part
in an impressive multi-sensory show
in the site’s own mini theatre, a really important way for visitors to appreciate not just the history of Pedro St James but of Cayman itself. You can also
wander around the lush gardens, and generally, appreciate life as it was
lived hundreds of years ago. Its also
a great location for events, including weddings, as well as family events such as exhibitions and shows.
CENTRAL GEORGE TOWN
To gain more of a historical insight
of the Cayman Islands, the centre of George Town is well worth a visit. At
its heart lies Heroes Square, which has some thought-provoking monuments and statues, including a monument called ‘Tradition’ created to honour all the seafaring Caymanians who had lost their lives for their family and country.
National Trust site, Fort George,
is another fascinating spot, where
you can learn about how Caymanians have protected their islands over the years. Enjoy beautiful artwork by local artist John Broad, whose murals tell of Cayman’s historical development and the bravery of its people.
